Call for Applications

How has Israel shaped the culture, religious expression, political and organizational life, and self-understanding of American Jews between 1948 and the present? This subject will be explored at a two-day seminar sponsored by The Lisa and Michael Leffell Foundation, August 2-3, 2016 in White Plains, New York. Facilitated by senior academic faculty and leading opinion-makers, the seminar invites applicants from a broad range of disciplinary backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences. All transportation and lodging expenses will be provided by the Foundation. Seminar presenters will receive a $2,500 stipend for their participation.

Advanced graduate students, early career academics, and thought leaders are invited to submit an application by March 18, 2016, with notification of acceptance to the seminar by April 15, 2016. Applicants should submit a two- page resume that includes personal contact information, education, degrees earned, publications, and names with contact information of two persons who can directly reflect on the candidate’s past performance and future promise. Each applicant must submit an 800 word essay explaining how their scholarly or professional interests intersect with the seminar’s theme. Helen Gartner Hammer Scholars-in-Residence Program

The Helen Gartner Hammer Scholars-in-Residence Program provides scholars, artists, writers and communal professionals the opportunity to be in residence at the HBI at Brandeis University while working on significant projects in the field of Jewish women’s and gender studies. Residences range from one month to a full academic semester.

Program structure

The accepted program recipient(s) will receive a monthly stipend to support her/his research. In addition, recipients will receive (shared) office space at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University and access to all available Brandeis University resources.

Participants (may) have the opportunity to present their research to the Brandeis community, depending on the length of residency. SIRs may also contribute to the HBI’s Donna Sudarsky Memorial Working Paper Series, or write for the HBI blog Fresh Ideas from HBI.

Participants are invited to take part in all HBI activities, but they are not required to do so.

There are no eligibility requirements. Applications (in English) from outside the United States are welcome. Open to applicants regardless of gender or religion.

The Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, invites applications for a visiting scholar during the 2016-17 academic year. Candidates may apply for a one-semester fellowship, either Spring or Fall term, or for a full academic year. The field of expertise within Jewish Studies is open. The deadline for applications and letters of reference is December 7, 2015.

The visiting scholar will receive a stipend of $30,000 per semester, an office at the Bildner Center on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus, as well as access to the University’s library system. The scholar may be asked to teach a course in Jewish Studies, depending on the needs of the Department of Jewish Studies. In addition, the scholar will be asked to participate in the Bildner Center’s educational programs, which may include giving a public lecture or a faculty seminar, conducting informal meetings with students, or a teachers’ workshop.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. is required at the time of application; academic rank and field of expertise within Jewish Studies are open.

Scholarship: Earth Science and Engineering Department, Imperial College London, for Israeli Citizen

A PhD scholarship available immediately at the Earth Science and Engineering Department, Imperial College London, for a student holding an Israeli citizenship.

The scholarship includes a generous bursary for living in London, all tuition fees, an allowance for both professional and private travels between the UK and Israel, and a generous allowance for consumables. 2012 June 12 – 25, 2012 at Brandeis and June 27 – July 5, 2012 in Israel

A program of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University, the Summer Institute for Israel Studies assists faculty in designing new courses in Israel Studies or incorporating a segment on Israel into existing courses. Candidates from the social sciences and humanities are invited to apply.

Fellowships include:

-Seminars taught by world-class faculty from Israel and the United States -Travel, meals, and accommodations at Brandeis and in Israel -Stipend of up to $2500 for full course; $1500 for Brandeis seminar only -Access to vast Israel Studies online resource center and Brandeis University’s online library resources

Scholarship: PhD Studentship in Israeli and Mideast Studies, U Manchester

A PhD Scholarship in Israeli and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Manchester

One fully funded PhD Studentship in Israeli and Middle Eastern Studies is open to Home/EU or International applicants who meet the criteria of the studentship and have been accepted onto the Middle Eastern Studies PhD programme. A successful completion of a Masters degree is a prerequisite for entry to a PhD (see details here: http://www.llc.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/ ).

To be eligible for this particular award, the applicant’s PhD research proposal must fit one of the following two themes:

1. Social, political and/or cultural aspects linked to the experiences of Jews in any area of the Arab Middle East in the 20th century.

2. Social, political and/or cultural aspects linked to the experiences of Israel’s Mizrahim and/or women and/or Palestinian-Arab citizens in the post-1948 period.

Applicants must possess a near-native competence of Arabic and/or Hebrew and proven advance reading knowledge in at least one of these languages. The award covers full fees and maintenance. The maintenance per annum will be at the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) level – which is £13,590 for the 2011-12 academic year.

Friday 15 April 2011 is the closing date for receipt of the Funding Application Form for this Scholarship. To ensure that candidates are holding an offer of a place by the closing date, they are advised to submit their online application for a place on the programme no later than Friday, 1 April 2011.
